I was doing my daily reading plan of Psalms and Proverbs and came across this verse in Proverbs:
Pro 29:18 Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law. (ESV)
Pro 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (KJV)
It is interesting to look at the differences between the two versions. I was reading the ESV at the time. I think I have been reading in TNIV, but switched over for some reason. It was the “prophetic vision” that made it really stand out. You see the prophetic as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The New Testament has to be based on the truths in the Old Testament.
Without prophetic vision, or revelation, the people cast off restraint. Restraint or perish here means to expose or uncover.
Blessed is he who keeps the law or torah. The Torah is the Pentateuch or the first five books of the Bible.
Revelation is the revealing. A revealing vision is going to be a vision given by God, as He alone knows all. You can see the image of people who are operating outside of God’s plan or direction for their lives are casting off His protection. The ones that hold to the Word of God are blessed.
