Shema

Shema– (Hebrew, ‘hear’) Central prayer in the Jewish LITURGY. It is made up of three passages: Deut. 6:4-9; Deut. 11:13-21; and Num. 15: 37-41. It is recited twice every day, once in the morning and once in the evening. It should also be recited before death.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deu 6:4-9)

The LORD your God commands you to love him and to serve him with all your heart and soul. If you obey him, he will send rain at the right seasons, so you will have more than enough food, wine, and olive oil, and there will be plenty of grass for your cattle. (SEE 11:14) But watch out! You will be tempted to turn your backs on the LORD. And if you worship other gods, the LORD will become angry and keep the rain from falling. Nothing will grow in your fields, and you will die and disappear from the good land that the LORD is giving you. Memorize these laws and think about them. Write down copies and tie them to your wrists and your foreheads to help you obey them. Teach them to your children. Talk about them all the time–whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning. Write them on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates. Then you and your descendants will live a long time in the land that the LORD promised your ancestors. Your families will live there as long as the sky is above the earth. (Deu 11:13-21)

The LORD told Moses to say to the people of Israel, “Sew tassels onto the bottom edge of your clothes and tie a purple string to each tassel. These will remind you that you must obey my laws and teachings. And when you do, you will be dedicated to me and won’t follow your own sinful desires. (SEE 15:39) I am the LORD your God who led you out of Egypt.” (Num 15:37-41)
